Beth Yahp’s short story reflects a Malaysian student’s experiences at University in Sydney as she studies film and narrative. Shaun Tan’s The Arrival, on the other hand, is a migrant story told as a series of wordless images in which a man leaves his wife and child in an impoverished town, seeking better prospects in an unknown country on the other side of a vast ocean. With nothing more than a suitcase and a handful of currency, the immigrant must find a place to live, food to eat and some kind of gainful employment. Ania Walwicz’s poems also reflect the enormity of the migrant experience. Her poem “Australia” provides a first-hand perspective on attempting to come to terms with living in a brand-new country; while her poem “So Little” provides a child’s understanding of that experience. Questions to guide the discussion:1. How does Beth Yahp describe the dislocation and not fitting in she felt as an overseas student in this story?2. How does Yahp reconcile her Malaysian background with her new bohemian lifestyle?3. How does Shaun Tan manage to tell his story without using words in The Arrival?4. How do pictures function as language in this graphic novel?5. How does the form of Walwicz’s poetry operate to convey her themes of alienation and dislocation?6. What does Walwicz tell us about the enormity of the migrant experience?7. Discuss the way ‘otherness’ operates in the texts of all three writers. Is otherness apparent in language, physical appearance, cultural background etc.?
