For this paper you will make an argument in answer to the unit question or some related or subsumed question. Present your own argument in your own words, using resources from this unit as support for your argument. Your argument should be clearly stated in a thesis statement, you should have clear main supporting points, and you should consider and respond to at least one objection. See the grading rubric attached the the assignment for grading criteria.
There are no length requirements for this paper, but a good length is likely between 4 and 6 pages. It’s fine if your paper is longer than this. If your paper is shorter, look for ways to deepen your argument.
Include a full bibliography. You are permitted to seek out additional sources if you like.
Possible Paper Topics
*Remember that your paper needs to be argumentative (taking a position and arguing for that position).*
-Marxist analysis of some aspect of business (e.g. global supply chains)
-CSR analysis of a business (e.g. Patagonia)
-Smithian analysis of a particular business practice
-You could even argue some contrast or similarity between Smith and Marx, maybe using an example
Write a paper on Buddhist economy analysis of a business practice, or individual business, or some specific aspect of the economy
-Argument for/against philanthropy using an example (e.g. Bill Gates) (There is an Oxford debate on YouTube which may be helpful here, called “Is it immoral to be a billionaire?” There are, I think, eight short videos in the series, each one taking a side and making a short argument.)
-Argument for/against corporate taxes using Reich, philosophical arguments concerning taxation, a combination of those, or a new argument of your own (just make sure it is a moral argument)
-Respond to Graeber’s piece (arguing that he was right or wrong about something)
-Respond to the piece on contingent work (arguing they were right or wrong about something)
-Put together your own argument having to do with the meaning of work
-Put together your own argument concerning business’ proper role in society
-You can also use any of the theory we looked at last unit and apply one or more of those to some specific topic covered in this unit (An example might be, an argument against contingent work as a HRM strategy from a Kantian perspective)
